This person has responsibility for the planning, supervising and evaluating of the clinical care given to every trauma/injured patient. Ensures comprehensive and continuous care for trauma patients and critical ill/injured patients in the emergency department and through inpatient admission or transfer. Responsible for the overall supervision of the clinical care provided to trauma patients throughout the continuum. Participates and oversees the department’s clinical performance improvement activities and works in coordination with the operational performance improvement coordinator to ensure a strong trauma program for our community.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Provide regular and dependable attendance.
  • Clinical practice is in accordance with hospital, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Knowledge in the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) standards and care guidelines.
  • Assist and/or leads site visits conducted by the ACS-COT.
  • Provides clinical leadership and develops, updates and follows through with plan of care, incorporating benchmarking guidelines (clinical evidence-based guidelines) and standard of care for all injured patients.
  • Is engaged in the patient/customer satisfaction effort and looks for opportunities to ensure all customers have an excellent experience.
  • Age specific competencies.
  • Works with the director on fiscal responsibilities within the scope of trauma services.
  • Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating short- and long-term goals for the trauma service.
  • Participates in monthly trauma leadership meetings with Trauma Program Director, Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Registrar/Operational PI Coordinator.
  • Participates in monthly peer review and operational meetings.
  • Oversees clinical trauma education in the emergency department and inpatient units.
  • Reviews, develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures for the trauma service.
  • Works with the trauma leadership team to investigate and provide solutions to problems that may be encountered during patient care.
  • Provides clinical trauma orientation to new emergency department and inpatient clinical staff.
  • Participates in community injury prevention and outreach efforts.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with clinical and ancillary departments.
  • Stays current in the field of emergency/trauma nursing through continuing education, professional societies and journals.
  • Develops and ensures clinical competence for nursing staff caring for trauma patients.

Education/Experience

Education Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Education Preferred: Master of Science in Nursing

Experience Required:  5 years nursing experience in emergency, trauma, transport or equivalent

Experience Preferred: Previous experience in nursing leadership preferred.

Licensure: Valid Indiana License as a Registered Nurse.

Certifications: TCRN, CEN or equivalent certification is preferred.
