Operates a computer activated telephone switching system to receive and transfer incoming and outgoing calls as received. This position is also responsible to monitor other systems that are installed in the communication center which are related to the safety/security and fire systems. This position is responsible for dispatching non-emergent ambulance transports for Reid EMS and coordinating transport with outside EMS agencies as needed; dispatch calls for service for the Reid Health Police Department. This position assists others with communication, notification and informational needs as needed.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Answers, screens and handles all calls received through the switchboard

  • Activates and uses the hospital wide systems, cell phones, pagers, mass communication system by activation of specific teams within the system

  • Make direct contact with Physicians and other staff as needed

  • Communicates directly with Security and Engineering as needed by use of in house radio system and cell phones

  • Responsible for the in-house emergency alert phone (5555) alerting staff to specific emergency codes within the hospital as they occur

  • Maintains the files, logs and special instructions that are used in locating others or that assist other departments in monitoring on call activities

  • Handles inquiry procedures on the computer system

  • Monitors the Fire Boards and responds appropriately

  • Accepts after hours calls and routes appropriately

  • Follows the clinical decision-making paths associated with each practice/provider

  • Refers patients to the nurse call program as appropriate

  • Monitors radios, weather notices, etc and acts appropriately as appropriate for the organization

  • Answer questions of the customer/patient/consumer accurately, attempting not to have to transfer when possible. If transferring, directs calls to the most accurate location so the customer does not have to repeat their story numerous times or be delayed.

  • Directs patients (in Connersville) appropriately to the ED triage area, monitors customers in the lobby area and alerts appropriate individuals for situations that present. Stays in close communication with Security and ED Leadership.

  • Receives incoming calls regarding non-emergency ambulance transport

  • Works within the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) program, used to notify ambulances of a needed transport; maintains record of transport

  • Coordinates ambulance transport with outside EMS agencies when Reid EMS is not available

  • Prioritizes efficient and safe transport of patients

  • Receive incoming requests for law enforcement assistance from Reid Health Police Department

  • Focus on EMS crew safety, officer safety and security

  • Use of radio, phone, computer or other communication device to direct EMS crews

  • Is responsible for maintaining constant contact with all RHPD officers to ensure safety and the documentation of law enforcement activities

  • Assist with internal code response by notifying appropriate individuals

  • Coordinates team and code activations using the mass notification/communication system

Education/Experience


• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Public Safety (911) or equivalent, preferred.


Licensure and Certification
• Must be current or eligible to certify in National Incident Management (NIMS) IS-100, IS-200 and IS-800 through FEMA within 6 months of hire and must obtain certification
within 9 months of hire

Schedule Details

Evening Shift. 32 hours a week.
