The RN - Risk Analyst supports the operational functions of the Risk Management department and to improve the organization’s risk posture. This role involves close collaboration with department leaders to enhance visitor, staff, and patient safety. This role encompasses risk mitigation activities such as conducting risk assessments, collaborating with Quality and Patient Safety teams, and participating in business continuity planning. Additionally, the Specialist will assist in the development and review of hospital policies, reports, and consent forms for compliance, and will conduct risk management training and educational programs. The position also involves supporting claims management processes and data management, overseeing the dissemination of confidential claims information, and participating in all aspects of the claims process. The Specialist will maintain confidentiality, represent Risk Management on various hospital committees, and foster positive relationships with insurance carriers and general counsel. Staying abreast of healthcare risk management issues and completing projects as assigned by the Department Director are also key responsibilities.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Identification and Investigation of Risk-Related Events
    • Assist in managing and investigating incidents and adverse events, including but not limited to:
      • Ensure consistent classification of incident types.
      • Initiate investigations to obtain necessary documentation.
      • Identify potentially compensable events and initiate process to notify appropriate insurers.
      • Place and document account holds in the electronic reporting system and maintain a hold list.
      • Review itemized billing with the Director of Risk Management and other leaders to identify charges resulting from medical errors that may require adjustment or additional review.
      • Assign significance to incidents.
      • Collaborate with hospital department managers and/or directors to ensure appropriate follow-up is completed and appropriate documentation.
      • Refer cases to Managers, internal Quality Improvement teams, Peer Review Committees for appropriate follow-up to reduce the risk of recurrence.
    • Participates in activities designed to reduce risk exposure and improve quality and safety of patient care (ex. Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other similar improvement teams).
      • Tracks action items identified in RCA’s, ensuring completion of corrective actions.
    • Risk Mitigation Activities
      • Conduct risk assessments for departments and practices, identifying areas for improvement and developing corrective action plans.
      • Collaborate with Quality and Patient Safety teams to identify underlying causes and develop corrective action plans.
      • Collaborate with the manager/director and other departments for the identification of high-risk areas providing recommendations and solutions to eliminate or mitigate exposure to liability and enhance compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
      • Serves as a resource in problem identification, educational needs, and problem resolution, which have or may have an adverse effect on patient care, including the education of coworkers on hospital risk management and liability issues
      • Participate in organizational business continuity planning (BCP). Lead initiatives associated with BCP, as appropriate.
      • Develop and maintain risk management intranet sites and utilize technology resources.
    • Policy and Documentation Management
      • Assist in the development and review of:
        • Hospital policies related to risk management and patient safety
        • Reports and documentation related to risk events and mitigation efforts for various committees
        • consent forms for compliance with legal, ethical, and hospital standards
      • Risk Management Training and Educational Programs
        • Assist in onboarding new providers to review risk management procedures and their insurance coverage.
        • Conduct training sessions on risk management and high reliability principles and practices.
      • Claims Management Processes and Data Management
        • Oversees dissemination of confidential claims information and data to authorized individuals and institutions for purposes of credentialing, reappointment, and other purposes (ex. Clarifying coverage and providing claims information for employed providers)
        • Participates in all aspects of claims process which includes but is not limited to: response to interrogatories, requests for production, insuring documentation, and data management
        • Reviews periodic risk management claim reports
      • Completes project(s) as assigned by Department Director
      • Keeps abreast of healthcare risk management issues, assisting with implementation of new or revised guidelines and practices
      • Maintains the confidentiality and integrity of all information encountered during work activities.
      • Represent Risk Management on various hospital committee(s) as directed.
      • Maintain positive working relationship with the hospital’s professional and general liability insurance carrier and general counsel.
      • Performs special assignments as required.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum Education: Associate’s degree in nursing (ASN) with three years of clinical nursing experience and knowledge of the clinical care of patients
  • Preferred Experience: Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN); One (1) year or more in risk management, or patient safety. Familiarity with Root Cause Analysis, incident reporting, business continuity planning, high reliability, and risk management strategies.

Licensure:

  • Active clinical license in Indiana (RN)
  • Preferred Certifications: Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) or Certified Professional in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM)

Schedule Details

Day Shift. Monday – Friday 8-4:30
