The Preadmission Testing Nurse is responsible for contacting incoming patients to obtain and review health history. Analyses and assess clinical data related to the patient’s anesthesia risk and appropriateness of ASC site of service. Orders additional testing needed prior to surgery when necessary. He/she will practice in accordance with accepted departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Overview of Responsibilities

1. Promote Mission Statement and C.A.R.E principles of organization.
2. Call the patient to review Surgical, health and social history.
3. Review the patient’s pre-operative labs ordered vs. needed labs and
communicates abnormal results to the surgeon’s office.
4. Use sound clinical judgement to determine abnormalities requiring anesthesia
review.
5. Instruct the patient regarding: Time of surgery/arrival, NPO status, Prep if
required, answer questions and refer to surgeon’s office as needed, attire to wear
day of surgery, current medication (bottles or list), responsible adult driver,
responsible adult to stay with patient post op as per anesthesia/ sedation
guidelines, cardiac and pulmonary clearance as needed per history or lab results
and removal of jewelry.
6. Follow procedure for Reid Perioperative Clinic patient: Call 1 to 2 days before
surgery regarding surgery arrival time, NPO status, and check for history of sleep apnea, and/or latex allergy and report to appropriate people (schedulers and
operating room). 

7. Direct and delegate care based on identified need, skill and competence of other
care providers.
8. Demonstrate that he/she can work independently within scope of practice.
9. Coordinate care with other disciplines.
10. Uses appropriate resources- Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinators, ROSE Clinical
Director, Pharmacy, etc.
11. Demonstrate good time management by having no unjustified overtime.
12. Inform supervisor when hours worked may accrue overtime and incidental
overtime.
13. Maintain work operations by following policies and procedures, Standards of
Care, and Standards of Practice.
14. Complete Healthstream requirements as assigned.
15. Maintain annual competencies, licensure, and/or certifications and continuing
education.

Education/Experience

Successful completion of ROSE and Reid Health orientation and competency based skills appropriate for the area assigned. Individual performance and competency based skills are maintained through ongoing and continued professional educational offerings.  
 
Education Required
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Accredited practical nursing
certificate. 
 
Experience Preferred:  Minimum of three years’ experience in Surgical Services 
 
Licensure 
  • Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse licensed in the State of Indiana
 
Certifications 
  • Basic Life Support- preferred but not required 
 
Other:  
  • Calm, pleasant, professional demeanor is expected. 
  • Must have the ability to work cooperatively with all staff, physicians, and departments. 
  • Must be committed to Patient Experience and Patient Safety. 
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to instruct and comfort patients and their families, and maintain contacts with a variety of internal and external staff. 

Schedule Details

Day shift. 24 hours weekly.
