The RN Circulator is dedicated to each patient for the duration of each surgery. The circulating nurse is responsible for managing all nursing care within the operating room, observing the surgical team from a broad perspective, and assisting the team to create and maintain a safe, comfortable environment for the patient’s surgery.

Overview of Responsibilities

  1. Promote Mission Statement and KSBs of organization.
  2. Complete and verify surgical documents.
  3. Verify patient identification
  4. Ensure correct site, correct procedure surgery.
  5. Assess the patient for allergies and other preexisting conditions.
  6. Prepare and position patients for surgery.
  7. Oversee blood transfusions.
  8. Maintain infection control throughout the procedure.
  9. Monitor high-tech activities such as arterial lines, electrosurgical and laser devices, and video and imaging equipment.
  10. Perform counts of surgical items prior to the operation and after to ensure none are retained in the patient.
  11. Responsible for coordinating activities in the event of an emergency.
  12. Responsible for preparing and responding to all situations that affect patient care and safety throughout operative procedures.
  13. Responsible to stay self-informed of and support Policies and Procedures,
  14. Standards of Care, and Standards of Practice.
  15. Maintain work operations by following policies and procedures, Standards of Care, and Standards of Practice.
  16. Complete Healthstream requirements as assigned.
  17. Maintain annual competencies, licensure, and/or certifications and continuing
    education.

Education/Experience

Successful completion of ROSE and Reid Health orientation and competency based skills appropriate for the area assigned. Individual performance and competency based skills are maintained through ongoing and continued professional educational offerings.   
 
Education Required: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
 
Experience Preferred: Minimum of three years’ experience in Surgical Services 
 
Licensure: Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Indiana 
 
Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support 
Other:  
  • Calm, pleasant, professional demeanor is expected. 
  • Must have the ability to work cooperatively with all staff, physicians, and departments. 
  • Must be committed to Patient Experience and Patient Safety. 
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to instruct and comfort patients and their families, and maintain contacts with a variety of internal and external staff.
  • Recognize and reinforce positive efforts of the healthcare team/co-workers.
  • Address issues in a tactful and timely manner

Schedule Details

Full Time. Rotating Shifts. 7:30a-7:00p, 7:00a-5:30p, and 7:00a-3:30p.
