The Gastroenterology RN plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates nursing care for patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during operative or other invasive procedures. The RN specializes in illnesses and disorders related to the entire GI tract. The RN works collaboratively with other professionals to meet patient needs and is accountable for the patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided. The RN uses clinical knowledge, judgement, clinical-reasoning skills based on scientific principles, plans and implements nursing care to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual responses of the patient.

Promote the organization’s Mission Statement and C.A.R.E. principles by advocating for the core values in daily practices.
Adhere to the standards outlined in the Admitting and Discharge Policies to ensure high-quality nursing care.
Provide comprehensive nursing care during the Pre-Op, PACU, and Phase II periods to address the total needs of the patient.
Assist the physician during procedures and in managing endoscopy scopes to support efficient and effective patient care.
Observe and assess vital signs, IV sites, dressings, tubes, drains, and any special monitoring equipment during the admit and recovery period to ensure patient safety.
Continuously assess the patient using a systematic approach, notifying the anesthesiologist or surgeon of any pertinent findings or changes in the patient’s condition.
Manage and assess the discharge process from each area of care (Pre-Op, PACU, Phase II) to ensure a smooth transition and comprehensive patient education.
Initiate, maintain, and provide discharge instructions, including guidance on the use of PCA devices (if ordered) and postoperative care at home.
Assess the patient’s and family’s ability to comprehend and follow discharge instructions, ensuring clear communication and understanding.
Utilize available resources to enhance the patient teaching plan, ensuring the patient and family have the necessary information for successful recovery.
Stay informed of and support the organization’s Policies and Procedures, Standards of Care, and Standards of Practice to uphold high-quality care.
Ensure consistent work operations by following organizational policies, procedures, and standards, maintaining a safe and effective care environment.
Complete required Healthstream training courses as assigned to maintain professional competence.
Maintain annual competencies, licensure, certifications, and continuing education to stay current with industry standards and improve professional practice.
