This position performs day-to-day billing and follow-up activities within the revenue cycle operations.  Responsible for ensuring assigned insurance balance does not age past filing deadlines based on payor’s specific requirements.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Verifies insurance coverage by investigation or interview.
  • Follows up on accounts with insurance payers in a timely manner to avoid any timely filing losses.
  • Adds account notes in Epic as appropriate and per department expectations.
  • Works acceptable number of accounts based on department productivity standards.
  • Utilizes telephone contacts, faxes, Internet, or other means as appropriate to successfully follow-up with payers.
  • Reviews insurance credit balances and refunds payer when appropriate.
  • Responsible for engaging management when a claim is approaching timely filing limit and are unsure of how to get the claim paid or unable to get the insurance/other responsible party to respond.
  • Requests and completes re-bills as necessary.
  • Notifies management when payers are being unresponsive.
  • Responds to requests for information from patients or payers about claims or coverage.
  • Actively participates in payer representative meetings to resolve issues.
  • Follows compliance with all laws, regulations, and guidelines of federal and state programs with an emphasis on prevention of fraud, waste, and abuse.
  • Position includes other duties and projects as assigned to support goals and outcomes consistent with department expectations.
  • Attends meetings as requested.

Education/Experience

Education Required:      

  • High school diploma or GED.

Experience Preferred: 

  • 2-3 years’ experience in medical billing or insurance with knowledge of government medical programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Champus, etc., and the associated payment methodology.

Licensure: None.

Certifications:  None.

Other: 

  • Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Ability to work well under little supervision.
  • Objective and detailed approach to problem solving.
  • Good investigative and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work successfully with changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Epic.
  • Knowledge of UB-04, 1500, 837I and 837P formats.
  • Knowledge of ICD10 and CPT codes.
  • Extensive attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to perform job functions and make independent decisions as appropriate.

Schedule Details

Day Shift. 40 hours weekly, Between 6am and 6pm. This position works Monday -Friday. No weekends or holidays.
