The Inpatient O.T.A. is a skilled clinician who performs occupational therapy assessment and treatment to patients under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist. Occupational therapy is provided for treatment of physical disability and psychological disorders.

Overview of Responsibilities

  1. Provide regular and dependable attendance.
  2. Transport and transfer patients.
  3. Disinfect equipment.
  4. Prepare and straighten treatment areas.
  5. Utilize patient/family caregiver input in setting functional rehabilitation goals.
  6. Document goals in functional, measurable terms with stated time frames.
  7. Incorporate information gained in the OT evaluation and assessment to determine appropriate, specific treatment plan for intervention.
  8. Involve patient/family caregiver in treatment planning.
  9. Demonstrate competence in performing all procedures and treatments required in area of practice including but not exclusive to those listed in the Competency Inventory.
  10. Demonstrate awareness of continuity of patient care by following established plans.
  11. Modify patient care based on continual assessment of the patient and effect of treatment intervention.
  12. Demonstrate skills in identifying, interpreting, and incorporating patient’s psychological, physical, and social responses to intervention.
  13. Provide and/or recommend equipment or supplies for home use.
  14. Provide for patient’s personal care and environment throughout the treatment.
  15. Provide education appropriate to each patient’s level of understanding regarding evaluation, treatment, and self-responsibility.
  16. Instruct in home treatment program to facilitate rehabilitation and promote independence in care as appropriate.
  17. Collaborate with patient, caregivers, and other health care professionals in planning discharge from rehabilitation services.
  18. Initiate discharge planning at time of initial evaluation.
  19. Confer and communicate with referring physicians and other appropriate persons through the use of progress notes, letters, evaluations, team meetings, and direct contact concerning the proposed course, progress, and discharge plan of each patient.
  20. Complete clear, concise, and clinically useful documentation in medical record in a timely manner according to department procedures.
  21. Obtain counter-signatures by O.T. according to department policy.
  22. Seek appropriate information and feedback from the supervising O.T. in order to provide optimal care.
  23. Provide clinical supervision to Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant Students on site.
  24. Participate in and knowledgeable of QA&I activities.
  25. Ensure patient and departmental safety through work requests, following safety procedures and other appropriate measures.
  26. Assume responsibility to see that new occupational therapy orders are promptly scheduled and notify Director/Manager when assistance is needed.
  27. Assist in orientation and training of new employees and students as appropriate.
  28. Conduct, participate in, and supervise the training and observation of medical and nursing personnel, students, and other persons in occupational therapy.
  29. Market and promote occupational therapy services appropriately.
  30. Arrange for patient care items as appropriate.
  31. Submit capital equipment recommendations as appropriate.
  32. Arrange for patient care items as appropriate. Responsible for maintaining appropriate supply inventory.
  33. Inform supervisor of department needs.

Education/Experience

Education Required:  Associates degree in Occupational Therapy Technology from an AOTA-accredited educational program.

Education Preferred:  N/A

Experience Required:  None required. 

Experience Preferred:  Preference may be given to individuals with advanced clinical experience or skills.

Licensure: Must be fully certified in Indiana to practice as an Occupational Therapist Assistant.  May work with a Temporary Permit under the stipulated supervision of an O.T.  in accordance with Indiana regulations.

 

Additionally, if assigned to provide services in Ohio, the C.O.T.A. is required to hold a current Ohio license.

 

Schedule Details

PRN/ Registry

At least one weekend shift per month, one holiday per year. Additional opportunities for weekday shifts PRN.
