The Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and is responsible for the technical functions of the department’s management of pharmaceutical services.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Shows excellent communication skills.
  • Holds strong organizational skills.
  • Utilizes various pharmacy informatics systems, such as Epic, Omnicell, and QS/1.
  • Prepares medications in the Inpatient Pharmacy through utilization of technology such as carousel, strip labeling and packaging machines.
  • Prepares IV’s using barrier isolators and proper aseptic technique.
  • Processes and prepares Outpatient Pharmacy medications, with utilization of ScriptPro automation.
  • Restocks medications in Omnicell automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Serves as a resource to Nursing Staff and Pharmacists.
  • Determines appropriate routing of phone calls.
  • Maintains basic charging and crediting for inpatients.
  • Facilitates timely dispensing of medications from Pharmacy by pneumatic tube or hand delivery.
  • May have a focus area, such as those related to medication history collection where special training and evaluations are in place.
  • Completes other assigned tasks as requested by pharmacists or managers.
  • Demonstrates competency in providing pharmaceutical services to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Works cooperatively with all members of the health care team to coordinate interdepartmental functions and relationships.

Education/Experience

Education Required:  High School Diploma or GED

Experience Preferred:  At least 2 years experience as a Pharmacy Technician

Licensure:  Indiana Pharmacy Technician license (or eligibility to attain a license).

Certifications:  Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT), which must be obtained within 5 years of accepting position.

Schedule Details

Varied Shift. 32 hours weekly.
