The Emergency Services Nursing Manager is responsible for coordinating all administrative, technical, and/or clinical functions relating to the provision of services on a 24-hour basis within the emergency department. Provides leadership for all components of the department to maximize customer satisfaction. The Emergency Services Nursing Manager develops educational programs, formulates policies and procedures, establishes goals, engages in problem-solving activities, and provides fiscal management relating to the operation of the emergency department. Must possess the maturity, ability and flexibility to deal effectively with the constant changing situations encountered in the complex health care environment.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • The Unit Manager delegates or oversees patient assignments in accordance with level of care.  Level of care is based on the scope and complexity of patients care needs, age of patient, cultural, spiritual and religious practices, emotional needs/barriers, desire and motivation, physical and/or cognitive limitations and language barriers and the complexity of the assessment required by the patient.
  • Assures patient care assignments are made according to acuity level of patients and performance abilities of personnel and guides charge nurses in appropriate assignments.
  • Coordinates and evaluates quality and quantity of nursing care and identifies
    opportunities for improvement.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of various nursing and hospital policies/procedures and
    nursing standards/practices.
  • Responds to requests for evaluation of clinical situations.
  • Assures patient care assignments are made according to acuity level of patients and performance abilities of personnel and guides charge nurses in appropriate assignments.
  • Coordinates and evaluates quality and quantity of nursing care and identifies
    opportunities for improvement.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of various nursing and hospital policies/procedures and
    nursing standards/practices.
  • Responds to requests for evaluation of clinical situations.
  • Prepares annual operating/capital budget in collaboration with the Director.  Demonstrates the ability to work within the budget.
  • Assures patient discharge needs are met in collaboration with other disciplines
  • Actively participates and leads in departmental / hospital QA&I priorities through various means such as:  Patient Satisfaction, Bench Marking, Quality Indicators, Quality Initiatives, CMS Initiatives, Patient Safety, Staff Development, Event Reports, Pathways, Chart Reviews, Sentinel Events, etc. Ensures appropriate data is available to measure the patient outcomes, provider competency, and the efficiency of the service level.
  • Prepares and submits reports, projects, event reports and performance appraisals
    to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates innovation by investigating, proposing, developing and implementing new services/programs.
  • Contributes to the practice of Nursing by participation on Nursing Committees, Medical Staff and Hospital Committees/Task Forces.
  • Knowledgeable of legal and ethical aspects of nursing and serves as a resource.
  • Participates in, reviews/studies and addresses the feedback (results) of the Employee Opinion Survey.  Shares results with employees.

Education/Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree required, with Master's  degree preferred. 

Experience Required: Experience as a staff nurse required. 

Licensure/Certifications: Licensed in the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse is required. Must be BLS certified.
