Documents verbal orders for laboratory tests
a. Logs all specimens drawn into the laboratory information system using proper procedures.
Processes Non-Admit Specimens
a. Admits patients in LIS using proper procedures.
b. Orders correct tests and logs in the specimens.
Performs analyses on the laboratory test directory
a. Performs all procedures as outlined in the appropriate procedure manual protocol.
b. Learns new procedures and demonstrates competence as they are added to test directory.
c. Performs procedures within the stated turn around times
d. Completes work during assigned shift and leaves minimal amount for the next shift
e. Responds to changes in work as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage.
f. Analyzes control materials for each procedure; documents quality control procedures performed
g. Documents action taken on out of control QC results
h. Monitors quality control results for trends and deviations
i. Performs and documents appropriate preventative maintenance procedures
j. Monitors and assesses maintenance weekly for completion
Enters the test results into the computer
a. Verifies that the result being entered is for the correct patient.
b. Footnotes abnormal appearance of specimen.
c. Performs basic problem solving of abnormal or atypical results.
d. Calls Critical Results to appropriate nursing units; documents notification of Critical Values using canned footnote in computer.
e. Responsible and accountable for results verified.
f. Reviews of Workcenter Activity Reports for accuracy.
Maintains a clean and orderly work area
Helps substitute for technical supervisor in their absence
Notifies the supervisor when supplies, test kits, and reagents should be ordered.
Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with age-specific population criteria, i.e. geriatrics, adults, pediatrics, and neonates.
Demonstrates appropriate troubleshooting capabilities; refers problems to the appropriate individual when indicated. Demonstrates ability to perform complex problem solving of abnormal or atypical results.
Uses independent judgement and knowledge to perform assigned tasks.
Participates in hospital and departmental quality assessment and improvement (QA & I) activities as required. Monitors results and helps implement corrective action.
Develops laboratory techniques and procedures and reviews current procedures in focused areas as assigned by the technical supervisor.
Conducts research in conjunction with the technical supervisor.
Assists the technical supervisor in the testing, evaluation, and selection of new
equipment.
Assists the technical supervisor in the set up and training of operators for new equipment.
Responsible for assuring that CAP proficiency results are performed and returned in a timely manner.
Responsible for coordinating the instruction of students and new employees as directed by the technical supervisor. May be required to oversee the work of non-independent practitioners and trainees.
Develops and presents continuing education programs for the laboratory staff.

Education Required: Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Technician program or other degree and experience that makes the employee eligible for MLT certification.
Education Preferred: Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Technician program.
Experience Required: None
Experience Preferred: Completion of a Clinical Laboratory internship.
Licensure: None
Certifications: ASCP or AMT
Other: Must be certified within 2 years of hire.
